Mary-Jess Leaverland has had a singing career many would envy – she won a singing competition in China (for 70 million viewers), represented Great Britain for the GREAT campaign (a 10-foot poster of her is up in a UK office in Japan), and was invited to sing the theme song for Downton Abbey on the official album.
There was certainly some luck involved, but as I learned, Mary-Jess put in a ton of work and boldly pursued opportunities.
“There are so many people who are waiting around for the right agent or manager or record label to come along and discover them. Don’t wait for it…Nobody’s going to do what you want for you…you have to do it.” – Mary-Jess Leaverland
Some of the highlights of our conversation include:
- the opportunities her Mum and Grandma gave her at a young age (and the mindsets they instilled in her)
- what happened in the week after winning the singing competition in China (and making national front-page news in the UK)
- why she decided to start her own record label (after landing a deal with a major record label)
- how she prepares for big performances
