Claire and Michelle Lockett are entrepreneurial world travelers, and 3 years ago, founded an eco hostel in the Gili Islands in Indonesia (with the help of over 500 volunteers). We met once in Laos and I bumped into them again in Cambodia, and we recorded this conversation outside under some trees (that annoyingly kept dropping crap on my laptop), but hey..that’s nature for ya.
“If you want to do something, just start…When we started the hostel people asked…’Well, have you run a hostel before?’…no. ‘Have you had a restaurant before?’…no. ‘Have you had a bar before?’…no. Then all of a sudden, on August 4th, 2014, we had all 3.” – Michelle Lockett
Some of the highlights of our conversation include:
- How to open a hostel (and own land) in a foreign country
- How they built a hostel with volunteer labor
- Spreading the word about their new hostel
- Advice for starting a hostel and creating the right vibe
